The Balrogs were believed to be Maiar corrupted to the service of Morgoth early on.The only Balrog remaining in
Middle Earth after the War of Wrath is apparently the one in Moria. In Letters number 144:

There is no mention of any more balrogs being 'born' after the fall of Morgoth.
