Angband was Melkor's western stronghold, a front line against the Valar. It seems to have been separate from Utumno itself. Angband was captained by Sauron when Utumno was in existence but was not completely destroyed when Utumno was demolished by the Valar. The Balrogs and possibly Sauron hid in Angband's ruins when Melkor was taken captive by the Valar.
