Thorongil, "eagle of the star", was the name used by Aragorn in the service of Ecthelion, Steward of Gondor. He was also called Estel, "hope", while living in Rivendell; Aragorn; Strider; Longshanks, by Bill Ferny; Dunedan, "man of the West", by Bilbo; Elessar, "elf stone", as king; and Telcontar, a translation of "Strider", the name he took as the name of his house.
