Sorry, I got busy and didn't make it back to OK Telchar's answer to my question, as I should have. (August 14-22)
The one thing in common was the placing or positioning (set, drop, throw) of a stone (rock, pebble). [I did not want to include looking into a Palantír or wearing a stone/gem.]
· Gandalf – makes (?) the stone cairn, or at least puts the the topmost stone upon it, at Weathertop to leave a message for Strider, A Knife in the Dark
· Glorfindel – left a beryl on the Last Bridge as a token, Flight to the Ford
· Boromir – dropped a pebble into the lake before the West Gate of Moria & disturbed the Watcher of the Water, A Journey in the Dark
· The Watcher in the Water – piled up boulders (and the two holly trees) against the West Gate of Moria, A Journey in the Dark
· Pippin – dropped a pebble into well in the guard room next archway leading to three passages in Moria & disturbed the orcs, etc., A Journey in the Dark
· Wormtongue – dropped or threw the Palantír from the balcony of Orthanc, trying to hit Saruman or Gandalf, The Voice of Saruman
· Pippin – placed a stone under Gandalf’s arm to replace the Palantír, The Palantír
· Ingold – positions stones in a wall – leader of the men repairing using hammers & trowels to repair the stone wall of the Rammas Echor, Minas Tirith
· Denethor – placed the Palantír on the marble table for his pillow in the tombs, The Pyre of Denethor
· Denethor – placed the Palantír upon his breast when he laid himself on the table in the burning pyre, The Pyre of Denethor
· Caradhras – “…the sounds were those of shrill cries, and wild howls of laughter. Stones began to fall from the mountain-side, whistling over their heads, or crashing on the path beside them. …”, The Ring Goes South
Sure glad you continued on with the game.
