I'm sorry to have made a question that couldn't be legitimately answered. I researched them carefully and brooded over them at some length to avoid this very problem. While I am sure that Gollum hated Sam, I can't place the passage you allude to where JRRT explicitly says that Gollum tried to have Shelob kill the hobbits so as to punish Sam. All the passages I can find show that the Ring is his overmastering motive. In fact, Gollum seeks to settle his score with Sam directly, by attacking him. Please tell me what I missed. It seems to me that he could have revenged himself on Sam or escaped his captive service easily without resort to Shelob. I understand that Gollum needed Shelob to kill Frodo so that he could get the ring without breaking his promise.
