I'll put it this way:
If anyone ever goes to the Northern Virginia/Maryland area, I recommend going to a park called Great Falls. The first time I saw the falls and walked on the river trail, all I could think of was how it was a lesser version of my mind's eye of Middle Earth forests. It may be the closest real-life equivalent there is, if such a thing exists.
