There have been some classic films made in much that fashion, actually... but all those I can think of were a very different
kind of film– not something which is in all other respects a highly conventional flick. And if you
are going to do things that way, you need an awful, awful lot of objectivity and self-discipline when it comes to putting the final cut together– or else be willing to step aside completely and let the editor take over.
If Jackson & Co really made
LotR this way, then, well, good for them, because it’s a terribly hard thing to carry off– but I think they must have been bringing a lot less ego along with them at that stage. (Or were more afraid of Tolkien fans.)
