Some of the reasons for their places in the formation are pretty obvious (Fëanor attacks, Melian defends), some I think are "historical" - as to how they fare in one year or kind of "storywise" (depending on what kind of "fellowships" are formed) etc. If you have any specific questions, ask tp.
