I think overall that any emphasis on actual
acting has given way to considerations of the visuals. After all, I daresay the majority of moviegoers these days don't want anything really thought-provoking or meaningful, as much as pretty explosions and emotional payoffs one can see coming a mile away. Or at least that's the perception of many movie makers. The addition of 3-D only exacerbates the problem, as you say. I see the 3-D thing as a gimmick, and one that will only serve to cheapen
The Hobbit in general and make it look like just another 'blockbuster'.
