Whatever this is, my guess is that "the darkness" and "after glory came the loss" refers to the fate of
Númenor, which
also changed the shape of the world. So in that case we would be looking for a geographical feature (the "mother") that reached the western coast
only in the Second Age.
I haven't thought of what it could be, though.
