I've got about three characters that I would have been:
Fëanor -- I've always admired his independence and strength. Of course, I also do love the sparklies! I would have tried to resist Morgoth's darkness a bit more, and not have accused the Valar of acting like guard dogs. I think that was his biggest mistake. If not that, I wouldn't have charged on after the Balrogs during the Dagor-nuin-Giliath, I would have stayed put.
Fingolfin -- This may sound masochistic, but I would have wanted to lead my people over the Helcaraxë. I think it would be something every leader wants to do. He was also one of the bravest, strongest Elves ever born. The thing that I would have done differently is not go charging off after Morgoth. I think that this entire family had that problem. Of course, I do understand Fingolfin's rage, but still, there are other ways to have revenge.
This is going to scare some people:
Maeglin -- I'm interested in psychiatry, and how people think, so I've always wondered what went on in Maeglin's head. What was he thinking when his life was falling apart around him? I mean, that Elf's mind is every psychiatrist's dream!

But Melkor also was there, and he came to the house of Fëanor, and there he slew Finwë King of the Noldor before his doors, and spilled the first blood in the Blessed Realm; for Finwë alone had not fled from the horror of the Dark.
