There is a reference in The Silmarillion to 'crystals' that Feanor made, which strangely sound like the palantiri:

Tolkien never spells it out for us, as "these crystals = palantiri" but we should be able to put 2 and 2 together to make 4 here. How many crystals which allow you to see far away lands, clearly as eagles' eyes exist in Arda?
