Did he live in the First Age? - Actually, scrap what I said above and make that a clear NO. I was just being nasty and allowing for a crazy theory which isn't substantiated by anything in the book. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
Did he take part in LotR? - Yes!!!

Is he a wose? - We've established above that he's not a Man, which would include the Woses (or Drú-edain); therefore obviously No.
Did it help the fellowship in any way? - Yes, I think you could say he was helpful to some of them.
