That was a very interesting thought, Diamond 18, and I agree with all that you and Kalimac have written!
Sam has always been my favourite character, I guess because none of the other characters reveal so much of their thoughts and feelings to the reader. That`s why we really can share his emotions.
His faithful, devoted love for his master is for me one of the most touching things in the book. (I guess such devotion , and such a character is hardly to be found anymore nowadays...)
The tears always rise in my eyes when I read "The choices of Master Samwise". Sam is so humble and yet so brave! He doesn`t trust his own judgement, but instinctively he (nearly) always does the right thing.
I`m just reading JRRT`s letters, and recently found the following:
"read the last 2 chapters (Shelob`s lair and the Choices of Master Samwise) to C.S.Lewis on Monday morning. He approved with unusual fervour, and was actually affected to tears by the last chapter" (#72, 1944)
Well, I needn`dt be ashamed of my tears, then!! [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img]
