Why not have JR-D as Gloin and give him some of Balin's bits. (After all, in PJ's movies he did quite a bit of switching speakers-beginning with the prologue). Some of Balin that could be transferred to Gloin:

After this bit of trickery, Balin gained respect for Bilbo's abilities. He's the only Dwarf that volunteers to accompany Bilbo down the secret passage to Smaug. Of all the Dwarves in the quest, he is the only one known to have visited Bilbo afterwards at Bag End.

You could certainly explain the family resemblance of Gloin to Gimli.
