To be more specific, the Lord of the Nazgul used a Morgul-blade, which seems to be a general term for all blades enchanted with any "evil" spell. Morgul-knifes will have the effect of making one "cross-over" to the shadow world. They also disolve in the sunlight, or at least the shards do.
