If worse comes to worse, just explain that while he may disapprove of Tolkien's works, countless thousands of others enjoy them immensly. If you have to do a book report on the latest book you've read, you can do it on The Sil, LOTR, or some other work by Tolkien, gently explaining the ideals and beliefs in the works, or held by Tolkien, though that might not be the greatest idea.
