Well, Gandalf was definitely in
The Hobbit. In fact, he was responsible for the entire adventure. And he did posess the Ring
Narya already during that journey. He recieved it from Cirdan the Shipwright when he arrived in Middle-Earth around the year T.A. 1000.
The Hobbit took place in 2941-2, almost 2000 years after Gandalf got Narya.
