Agreed. Another piece of advice I'd like to give all newer players is not to trust anyone else's judgement but only their own. I was totally lead in my first game and I actually asked advice from more experienced players.
Luckily, those whose advice I followed were gifted, but I could have had worse luck... But I don't think that is necessarily your problem, and like I said before, you played really well, especially towards the end.
