I don't know if they are more interesting than the Elves, but I am finding them increasingly interesting in their own right since re-reading The Hobbit recently, and reading additional material on the War between the Dwarves and Orcs and the section in Unfinished Tales on Gandalf's version of the beginnings of the Quest to destroy Smaug.
Their slightly greedy nature seems to add an element of interest--some times the Elves almost seem too perfect. I am beginning to think that a movie of The Hobbit might be pretty good after all (obviously if handled well)...
