Hmm... well, aura comes from the late Middle English for breeze (and from there, from Latin from Greek), so perhaps 'gale' would have worked. Only that would have been even more obscure!
Or 'vacuum' could have stood in opposition to its meaning of 'atmosphere.' I actually thought it was a good clue; you just started me thinking. And my attempts reinforce your notion of the difficulty of finding an antonym...
