I think Tolkien's men are meant to be us, after all we're only human and so are they. Elves are almost what people would want to be if they could have everything (beauty, strength and immortality). Men are much more fallible yet we are not worth less than the elves, there is death, the Gift of men that the Elves (save a few) can't have.
