I like the Silmarillion, if only slightly better. My favourite book of the trilogy is probably Book III involving the Three Hunters' arrival in Rohan, the appearance of the White Rider, and Helm's Deep.
My favourite volumes of HoME are 5, 10, 11, and 12.
