I agree with Reese, Sauron probably knew where Rivendell lay, but he also knew that dwelt there elfs with great power, such as Elrond and Glorfindel.

Remember the passage at the ford when even the ringwraiths are scared of Glorfindel and Aragorn. These elfs detained too much power for Sauron to just enter or attack Rivendell, as well as being too far away from Mordor to mount any sizeable attack on it.
