Normally I must say I'd happily join the Gandalf bandwagon, but I'm rather flattered to have (accidentally) triggered its rival. And most of the Dwarves, Thorin's line excepted, bore me...
So. Fundin. What's wrong with him?
Well, using the logic of Formendacil's linguistics, he clearly either possesses funds or raises them. Who knows what seditious cause he is lending his financial aid to? (I have my suspicions.) This is naturally why he likes to keep in the shadows and remain enigmatic, like all the best financial backers.
His son Balin seems to think that the Ring of Thrain is in Moria somewhere. Who could have misled him in this serious way, sending him chasing after a fictional goal and awaking a Balrog? Why not his sly father...
Fundin, besides, is at least rumoured to be dead, and yet along with several other historical anomalies he is still contesting. Hmmm, who in this competition is capable of raising the dead? I wonder. A clear link to the darkest of powers from this malicious, avaricious Dwarf!
His son's quite decent. Best to remove the father before he becomes a bad influence.
