Did Celebrimbor have any close assistants?
|
None were mentioned by name… but there was an elven-smith group that was formed with Celebrimbor. They were called the Mirdain, the jewel-smiths of Eregion, who were ensnared by Sauron, and unwittingly aided him in the making of the rings of power. Sauron was then called Annatar, they didn’t know at that time that he was the Dark Lord in disguise (since he appeared “fair”). It was only after Annatar/Sauron forged the One Ring that Celebrimbor perceived his duplicity and hid the three Elven rings of power.
Celebrimbor was Curufin’s son, remember? Making him the grandson of Feanor. (No wonder he was so talented!)
In UT, it was mentioned that Celebrimbor loved Galadriel and even made the greenstone, Elessar for her, even though she chose Celeborn! (I like him too! Celeborn the Wise!) The Elessar was given to Celebrian, who gave it to Arwen… who gave it to Aragorn.
As Naurlothwen mentioned above…
He fought bravely until he was overcome by Sauron’s forces who eventually dragged him to their Master. He was then tortured but would not reveal the Three Rings location. He was then killed and his broken body was hung on a pole, like a banner.
This was done to dishearten Celebrimbor’s allies.

WHY DID HE MAKE THE THREE?
|
Encouraged by Annatar, the elven-smiths made rings of power. Celebrimbor did not reveal to anyone that he had forged them (the Three), so they were untainted by the Dark Lord’s influence. Remember, only the Ringbearers knew of the Rings after Celebrimbor gave them into their keeping.
His main purpose was probably to aid them (the elves) and preserve their works, as well as to protect. Wherever the rings were, there was a certain “power” that preserved that place (e.g. Lothlorien and Imladris).
As Kuruharan mentioned, you can get more from Unfinished Tales as well as The Silmarillion. The Encyclopedia of Arda is a great source too! Here’s the URL, if you don’t know it yet - http://www.glyphweb.com/arda
