Well, it was actually the opposite for me - I got to know Tolkien through my then boyfriend many years ago. He lent me his books and I loved the story instantly. Later on, he gave me the boxed paperback set I still own and use. It has outlasted the friendship, and, as we live in different countries now, I've not seen him in years. I have no idea if he's still a fan.
I have had the privilege of meeting several Barrow-Downs members in real life, though, and have enjoyed being with them very much! I will meet some more this coming summer at the 'Tolkien 2005' event in Birmingham, England and am really looking forward to that.
I've also chanced to talk to people I already know about Tolkien's books and the movies and was surprised to find out that they are fans as well. We managed to get a good bunch together for an all-night movie showing a few months ago.
