Odd though it is to think of the Elves being "technologically advanced", since for us they seem to speak more of the good old days than anything else, it was still probably the case in this instance. The rope was magical to Sam in the same way that a bottle of penicillin would be a miraculous (or possibly witchcraft-inspired) cure if you took it back to the time of the Great Plague. It's all about perspective [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img].
