Curufin and Celegorm were sons of Fëanor. Curunir was Saruman's name, while Curufinwë was one of Fëanor's names. The Keeper was pointing out the similarity between Fëanor and Saruman's names.
I can imagine that, with Fëanor it would have been more about rivalry than friendship, at least where his craft was concerned. Also it is said that Fëanor always worked alone and almost never sought help or advice from others.
It's an interesting question, but of course due to lack of information all we can do is speculate.
