I know what you mean about just catching a glimpse of something belonging to Middle Earth out of the corner of your eye, but when you look its gone. I was hiking in the mountains near my town the other weekend and I kept thinking about the Nine Walkers on their journey after leaving Rivendell, kind of imagining I was one of them. Tolkien Fandom can exist on so many levels though. One can just barely scratch the surface and be rather content with that or be a Tolkien lore-master like Telchar (that guy amazes me with his knowledge of Tolkien lore).

I don't, however believe there is a certain criteria one has to meet to be a 'fan'
