I had much the samer experience.
Tolkien's verses are oftent he lat thing I come to appreciate in a story, whether in LotR or elsewhere. I am finally learning to not fear the poems!
And in the acse of the Kortirion set of poems they are I think an essential and as yet untapped key to understanding Tolkien's Elves, one of the origins of his legendarium and indeed of his life. Carpenter who had access to these poems [it seems] totally failed to realize their intrinsic value and nature.
