I had much the samer experience.

Tolkien's verses are oftent he lat thing I come to appreciate in a story, whether in LotR or elsewhere. I am finally learning to not fear the poems!

And in the acse of the Kortirion set of poems they are I think an essential and as yet untapped key to understanding Tolkien's Elves, one of the origins of his legendarium and indeed of his life.
