Except for Maedhros, we may actually be closer in opinion than I thought. And though it may appear from reading only
The Silmarillion that very little time passed between the death of Feanor and the arrival of Fingolfin, it was a period of several years (of the sun). Maedhros was the rightful king for quite some time, especially given that his captivity lasted quite a while, too.
I don't have time to look up the calendar dates now, but I can try to do it later if someone is really interested.
And I think we've summarized our positions in the debate well enough. I still have a lot of things to attend to right now.
