I've noticed the similarities too, with how ME resembles Europe. He may not have intended ME to seem like our world, but this is the only world we know and how can you not have some resemblences? And another thing I noticed when I looked at the map: if Middle Earth would equal Eurpoe, then Valinor would be about where North America is, if you've seen the map. ??? and with the island of Numenor, which sank, maybe that might be his version of Atlantis, since no one knows where that is.??? I don't know about any of this for sure, I'm just making guesses on the mysteries of the similatities of ME to our world.
