How would you have destroyed the Ring?

Was there only one way to get the ring into the fires of Orodruin? (Mount Doom?). Obviously, The way that the council of the Wise chose, was the best way...it worked! But have you ever been reading LotR and thought, "What about doing it this way?". I have.
I would have given the ring to Gwaihir the Windlord and sent him and all of his armies far off in the south by way of the coast all the way to South Gondor, and then head east to Harad (south of the bordering Mtns of Mordor, so that they would (apparently) be out of the picture. Then I would have created a diversion by sending all the mustered forces of the Elves and dwarves and men on a frontal attack on Mordor thus drawing Sauron's attention away, while Gwaihir, with the ring in his talons, surrounded by the countless eagles of his army would make a swift dash for the gaping mouth of Orodruin, and he could drop it in (Kind of like a reverse in football). Even if Sauron figured it out at the last minute and sent the Naz'gul on their winged steeds away from the battle to try and stop Gwaihir, they would have a pretty lousy chance of getting at him through thousands of eagles, right? But this poses the question, would the ring have had any power over Gwaihir (perish the thought)?
