About the ring melting: wouldn't it have been better to show Gollum holding the ring and falling, then cut straight to the Dark Tower crumbling? Surely even the thickest of moviegoers would have understood that the ring was destroyed, without having to see it. And it would have cut precious seconds from an ending which has largely been described as 'too long' by those who aren't book fans (and me, for that matter, but that's a whole different post).
