I can see why a few alterations might have been considered for the movies, some just change the characters entirely, don't they? I'm thinking of Gandalf's speech in FoTR, something like "I must go and speak with Saruman the head of my order, he is both wise and ...." Tolkien was so good about letting us know that Gandalf gave nothing away, and acted quite independently.
