But, if it is right that this has come as such a shock to Lee, it does seem rather heartless of Jackson not to have discussed it with him beforehand. All the more so given Lee's personal interest in these films (as an original fan of the books and as the one cast member who has met Tolkien) and his staunch support (up to now) of Jackson's interpretation of the books.
