Here are some comments reviewer Bill Muller had to say on the special effects of The Hulk:

Then there's the other big thing: Does the entirely computer-generated Hulk look real?
Well, of course not. He looks like a reasonable special effect; that is to say, he does not look like a cartoon.
But when the Hulk shows up on screen, it's like watching King Kong or a dinosaur from Jurassic Park. He's not real, and we know it. But that doesn't matter so much. Despite the ever-improving skill of computer artists, audiences are still willing to accept a bit of chicanery here and there.

Here's a couple of comments on Gollum written when TTT came out:

Obviously, Gollum is still the best CGI character out there.
