They have the rights to the films and could therefore make them as they saw fit. It makes utter sense that they did so with an eye to maximising audience numbers. <P>To be fair, however, I personally think that Jackson did try to take account of the fans, as well as his more mainstream audience, in the way that he made the films. Clearly, he was not wholly successful in this (how could he ever have been) but I honestly think that he tried.
