To capture the book, as PJ has tried to do with the movies of LOTR, I would go for the whimsical and light approach as the book of The Hobbit did. LOTR is gritty and darker than The Hobbit, so the movies were made that way. I think a film adaptation of The Hobbit should follow suit.
