This is Gamling (from the book) describing the forces he has at Helm's Deep, "But most of them have seen too many winters, as I have, or too few, as my son here." I think the implication was that we had everyone from young teenagers to older men fighting.<P>As for Eomer deserting his people. He was banished in the film and, at the time, knew nothing of the attacks in the Westmarch. It was reasonable for him to head north as that was were they were encountering orcs at the time.<P>H.C.
