Not to mention the moon seemed intensely bright as Gollum led Frodo and Sam on their little trip. I guess the hundreds of years living underground did not affect his light sensitivity after all. It's also good that the guards on the "constantly guarded" black gate did not see three figures move to within 200 yards of the gate while crossing the barren earth in broad daylight.
