I have been a fan of Tolkien for a while before the film. I was so excited when in FINALY came out! I was very glad that I had read the book(s) befor I saw the film. I don't think I would have understood half of the story or have a such a sence of knowing the characters if I hadn't read befor. I beleive Jackson did a wonderful job on the film but he ommited quite a few things (such as the naming of Isildurs Bane). As I said before, I would highly recomend to read the books befor seeing any film!
