A propos of all this, I always loved the description of Merry and Pippin, escaping from the Orcs in Fangorn wood:

I agree with a lot of Squatter's points, I don't think that hobbits are in general like children. But there are certain childlike things about them - their affectionate natures, for example, the way that they embrace and kiss each other without feeling self-conscious.
