As a writer, albeit an amateur, I will say that sometimes, a story as epic as
Lord of the Rings sometimes sweeps the author off his feet while he's writing it. Events, characters, and settings seem to spontaneously generate themselves on paper, and only later does the author realize that they have a purpose. The mind is a complex machine, so something desired or looked forward to in the subconscious could easily assert itself in such a way. I will end with a quote (or rather, a paraphrase)referring to Faramir, the character most dear to Tolkien:

Perhaps we should look at this "appearance" in the same way.
