They stopped in a range of hills that first night. Tents were pitched by the dwarves and men, but the elves slept beneath the stars, which were particularly brilliant. Elenna stood alone a little apart from the rest of the group, gazing up at Earindil, the elves most beloved star.
"Elbereth, Star Queen, I need help. I know I have to act all brave in front of the troops, but inside I am more afraid than any of them. Give me a sign, something to show me that I can do this."
"Standing out here alone, lass? You should be asleep. We have more travelling to do tomorrow" the gruff voice of Therin came from next to her.
"Did you hear me, friend?"
"Yes, Elenna. But ye're being silly. We all don't follow you because you can make pretty speeches. We follow you because we all have confidence that you won't abandon us. Do you think that Glorfindel of yours would leave you if he knew that you were afraid? He is just as frightened of losing you as you are of him. But such is the nature of war. I can't promise that we'll all be all right at the end, but I swear that I won't leave you, so don't you leave me. Now go to sleep." And with that, the dwarf lord strode off. Elenna grinned up at the stars, whispering
"Thank you."
