Yeah, you're right.  I'll edit.  The whole thing ended up a little too melodramatic for me; I'd like it to be more subtle...

By the way the reason I was thinking "unusual" is that Tolkien said minds needed to be fundamentally similar to do Osanwe.  I had the impression that it was primarily the language-speaking races (Valar, Eldar, men, elves, dwawrves, etc etc)that were all similar enough; I don't think Osanwe is normally done with a dog.  Or a horse. 
 
But still, your point is well taken; if it could be done, Pio would probably have known.

Oooooo-kay, I'm wrong again:  Gandalf calls Shadowfax... ""I bent my thought upon him, bidding him make haste; for yesterday he was far away in the south of this land."  So horses are similar enough for Gandalf to talk to... hmm, this opens things up nicely.
