Don't worry about it, Auriel. You had a good excuse and we all have other lives besides the Barrow Downs. *gasp*

As for your ideas, they're good. If Mattius ends up in trouble, it'll add more excitement to the story, And then when he comes back from the US, he can decide how he wants to be saved. I also like the idea that we go to ol' Tom's house and he and Goldberry are not there.
