"And can any one among you tell me why I should not?" Jerika considered Kane’s words. Looking upon the Elves, Jerika shook her head in confusion. Closing her eyes, Jerika remembered Kane’s speech of Elves. He was right. Elves caused just as much trouble with her kind as they had to them.
Darkness had begun to fall in the clearing, though none seemed to notice. The air became chill and the wind blew at the already falling leaves. Winter had begun to set in, but it was alright.
Well, if this is the day I die, I only wonder if I lived life right… Jerika thought as the group continued the ‘stare down’ in silence.
In such a situation, Jerika’s brother would say ‘A life for a life’. In such a situation, though, was that right? Maybe. Maybe not. If Findorak had no intention of helping Kane and Jerika, then would he really have killed an Elf for any other reason than defense?
Turning to Kane, Jerika wondered for a split second why he was here. Were the two of them called ‘Easterlings’ with such distain because they were from the east of this land they lived in, or because of something they had done? Was the word ‘elves’ spat out with hatred from the mouths of their people because they were of the first race, or because of things they in their turn had done to Jerika’s kin?
“No reasons? Nothing? So I faltered for nothing?” Kane spoke up one more time, his voice harsh and worn. Was he as sick of this as Jerika was? Truly and honestly, Jerika did not think before she spoke of who had killed Findorak. She didn’t think, either, that any of the Elves would take it so seriously as to offer their life.
Reasons...reasons...Jerika searched for a reason for Kane not to kill one of the Elves. So maybe the Elves detested Kane and Jerika and their kind. Was that a reason to kill one of them to make up for a life lost but not missed?
Not that Kane meant Jerika when he demanded a reason to stop, but Jerika felt responsible anyway.
“Because, Kane. It’s wrong. That’s why,” Jerika whispered simply. Her voice was so low though, she wasn’t even sure if even the ears of the Elves could hear what she had said. Speak up! Jerika scolded herself. Opening her mouth to say it again, she closed her mouth and merely sighed lamely.
