Maeralagos face was set in a grim expression as he approached the table where the lithe man sat. He remained standing before it, bending over slightly and lightly placing his hands on its edge.
"Have you come?" the man said vaguely, without looking up at him. "Come for this mission?"
"I have," Maeralagos replied softly, clearing his throat.
The man looked up then, appraising the Elf surreptitiously with his eyes, remaining polite, even respectful as he took him in. He barely glanced at Maeralagos' face, skimming the uniform he wore, his eyes coming to rest on the sword hanging rigidly at the Elf's side.
"Is that where you're strongest?" the man asked, tilting his heada bit towards the weapon.
"Yes," Maeralagos said, his hand automatically going to the hilt.
"No need for a demonstration!" the man said quickly, sitting up straighter. "I only asked because I see no other weapons."
"I do not generally have need for other weapons," Maeralagos replied, trying not to sound like he was bragging. "I find that I can accomplish most everything I need to, with the sword."
"What about a bow?" the man said, looking back up at him. "What about long-range fighting?"
Maeralagos' eyes dropped to the floor.
"A bow is best in that field, to be sure, but in close range, the sword rules, for me. And, while I could pass the test in either, my strongest is definitely the latter."
"But are you confident in both?" the man said, sitting back again.
Maeralagos paused, looking back up at the man, then at the ground. He didn't use a bow very often, it was true. There were even times when he felt like he was holding it incorrectly. Still, having been a guard for all of these countless years had some benefits. Even if he wasn't perfectly proficient in all weaponry, he would do it. He wanted to save his kinsman, and he wanted to defeat the evil forces that held him, and held its menacing hand poised over all of them.
"Yes," he said. "I am. I can. I can fight with them. I will fight them. I will fight alongside you, to the death, if necessary," he looked beseechingly into the man's eyes.
"Very well," the man said.
